Jesus Calls Nathaniel

Reading

“Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’[k] the Son of Man.” - John 1: 45-51

Reflection

Imagine that you're crying out to God in one of your favorite places.

And you're saying, "God, do you see me?" And then from the strangest places you get a call to say, "Come on this new adventure." And it strikes you as so unique but unusual from the place where it comes from, so unexpected that it seems like it can't be right. And often that's where God meets us. And something that might have been there all along, but you've never considered it to be the pathway that brings you new life and adventure.

That's where Nathaniel's at.

Probably crying out to God, saying, Do you see me?

And Philip comes to him and says, "Hey, I found that thing that you and I have been talking about for a long time. I found the one, the one who can show us the way."

And in disbelief you still say yes, and as you walk in that direction, you become surprised by how God meets you in some of the most unexpected places.

That's our journey too.

Is that moving forward on mission often is surprisingly simple in that it was hidden in plain sight?

And Jesus is inviting us into that, and where the encounter that you and I long for is oftentimes seen in the most ordinary places.

Let us pray.

Father.

There are parts of me that feel tired, tired of looking for the new thing.

Tired of trying to find a way.

I'm tired of trying to find healing, freedom, breakthrough, and encounter.

Glass Canvas Media (03:41.141)
Jesus, I want to see your face, and you promise that you hear me and you answer. Would you meet me here today in the ordinary places of my life? I love you and I want more of you in my life.

Amen.
