Jesus calls Philip

Reading

“The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.” - John 1:43-44

Reflection

What we know about Philip was that he was also a disciple of John the Baptist.

And there's something about Philip's ability to see where a deeper truth lies and for him to first follow John the Baptist and then to simply hear Jesus say, follow me, and for him to immediately do it. That there's something in him that we want for ourselves, that wherever the invitation is to go deeper, for us to be able to say yes to.

And that's what Philip brings us in his call. And he brings us in a call not to ascribe to a set of things or to learn a whole set of techniques or practices, but to follow someone. And Jesus says, follow me, and he does. And so we want to be more like Philip, where we can recognize truth.

In a person, in the person of Jesus, and be able to say yes to that with a true abandon.

That wherever Jesus wants to lead us, we would be willing to say yes.

So let's pray.

Dear Jesus, there are places you're calling me that are scary.

I feel your promptings and I'm unsure, unsure of how I'll be perceived or loved on the other side.

But I know I do want to go into the deep. I want to seek truth with the abandon that Philip has. I need you near, and I know you are near. Your perfect love casts out all fear. Give me courage to take a step into what I know you are calling me into.

Amen.
